Yerba mate is a naturally caffeinated infusion made from the leaves of the Ilex paraguariensis plant. It has been enjoyed across South America for generations and can be prepared hot as traditional mate or cold as tereré.
Yes. Yerba mate naturally contains caffeine. The amount in each serving varies depending on how much mate you use, the water temperature, the preparation method and how many times you refill it.
Unsmoked yerba mate is dried without exposing the leaves to smoke. Sherba is air-dried at a controlled temperature, producing a cleaner, smoother taste without the heavy smoky character found in some traditional mates.
Fill part of your mate cup with Sherba, tilt the leaves to one side and insert the bombilla. Slowly pour warm water at around 70 to 80°C into the lower side. Sip and refill until the flavor becomes mild. Sherba can also be prepared in a French press or served cold as tereré.
To prepare mate traditionally, you need loose leaf yerba mate, a mate cup, a filtered straw called a bombilla and warm water. You can choose the pieces separately or begin with a complete Sherba kit.

SHOP THE STARTER KITFOUR SIMPLE STEPS
Preparing mate is simple. Follow these four steps, then adjust the strength and temperature to your taste.
Step 1
Fill the gourd about two thirds full with Sherba. Leave enough room for the leaves to expand and for easy refills.
Step 2
Cover the top, shake gently, then tilt the gourd to create a slope and an open space on one side.
Step 3
Add a small splash of cool water to the lower side. Wait briefly, then insert the bombilla and keep it still.
Step 4
Pour water at 70 to 80°C into the same lower side. Sip through the bombilla and refill while the flavor lasts.
